Freedom, Fireworks & Fabric Scraps: A Creative’s Love Letter to the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July has always been a holiday filled with traditions. We all love watching the flags waving proudly in the summer breeze. We swim in the pool or play in the water during the day. Then the families gather together around picnic tables enjoying the grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, while the fireworks light up the night sky.

As a creative person, though, I’ve always noticed something else. I notice the colors. The bold reds, soft vintage whites, and weathered blues. I notice the handmade details—the quilts draped over lawn chairs, the decorations lovingly crafted by hand, and the little touches that make celebrations feel personal. I notice the stories. Because creativity and America have always shared something in common: the freedom to create.

As artists, crafters, makers, sewists, painters, and dreamers, we know that creating isn’t always neat. Sometimes it looks like fabric scraps scattered across the table. Sometimes it’s a paintbrush that didn’t quite do what we intended. Sometimes it’s a project that went completely sideways before it became something beautiful. Of course, I see beauty in that chaos…The freedom to try, to fail, and the freedom to start over. The freedom to imagine something that doesn’t yet exist and bring it into the world with our own two hands.

When I think about Independence Day, I don’t just think about fireworks. I think about the generations of people who built, created, stitched, painted, carved, designed, and dreamed before us. The quilters who turned scraps into treasures. The artists who captured history on canvas. The makers who built businesses from kitchen tables and spare bedrooms. The dreamers who believed they could create something better.

As creatives, we’re carrying on that tradition every time we sit down at our worktables. We carry it with every brushstroke, stitch, bead, Cricut cut, drop of hot glue…. every beautiful little mistake. Especially the mistakes. Because if you’ve ever accidentally glued your fingers together, cut fabric the wrong size, spilled paint where it didn’t belong, or discovered that your “quick project” somehow turned into a six-hour adventure, then you understand that creativity requires courage. And that courage keeps us going, laughing, and trying again. That is worth celebrating don’t you think?

This year, as we gather with friends and family, watch fireworks dance across the sky, and enjoy another summer holiday, I hope we also celebrate the freedom to create.

To make something with our hands.

To share beauty with others.

To support fellow makers.

To embrace the glorious mess that often comes with bringing ideas to life.

Because whether you’re covered in paint, surrounded by fabric scraps, armed with a glue gun, or fueled entirely by coffee and determination, you’re part of a long tradition of creators who make the world a little brighter.

So cheers to freedom, fireworks, fabric scraps and all your creative ideas! May your coffee stay hot, your creativity stay inspired, and your hot glue burns be minimal.

Happy Fourth of July from one creative heart to another.

Keep creating. ❤️🤍💙
