Let’s Find Your Creativity!
Time to Shift Your Way of Thinking
Discover Your Style
Start Small and Build Your Confidence
Notice how the definition says – especially in the production of an artistic work, NOT just in artistic work. So where am I going with this? Creativity isn’t just artwork or a craft project, it can be how you handle anything. When something breaks at home and you do not have the supplies on hand or tools to fix it, and you come up with a way to handle it with what you have on hand – that is being creative! Kids want a story, but you have already tucked them in, and you know if you go grab a book, they will get up again. So you conjure up a funny story to tell them instead – that is being creative! Think back to situations like this and you will realize you DO have a creative bone in your body!
This is going to be fun! Discovering your style may take a while but it will happen. When you are starting out, look for photos of artwork or crafts that draw you in. Choose the ones that talk to you and that will give you a start to the style you like, maybe even become your style. However, do not pressure yourself to match exactly what you see. As you go along on this creative journey you will find YOUR style. It may take a month or years to find it and that is okay. Enjoy all the moments, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Laugh off failures and keep going – you may even discover you have no ‘set’ style but multiple styles depending on the project, and that is okay!
Scared to start? I get it. Thinking something is hard can make it even harder. The first thing to do is realize being creative is a challenge, not hard or impossible, and it will help you grow in all kinds of ways. Start with something small, such as choosing an object around you and making up a story about that object. Answer questions such as how it got its name, why it is a certain color, or how would it act as a cartoon character. Don’t expect to create the best story every, entertain yourself, spouse or kids with the story. Even if you all laugh because it is absolutely ridiculous sounding, pat yourself on the back because, hey, you gave it a go! Continue small projects and no one cares if these projects fail, you shouldn’t either. Practice is practice, and as long as you enjoy it, keep trying.
- Start Small.
- It is okay to make mistakes, lots of them.
- Enjoy the process.
- If you get aggravated, walk away from the project, and try again later.
- If you have creative friends, ask them about their process, it may help you find yours.
- Don’t compare your work to others.
- Try different things like writing, music, photography, soap making, etc.
- Don’t let yourself sabotage yourself.
