The Fall Creativity Jar

25 Little Sparks of Inspiration for the Autumn Season

Sometimes creativity just needs a little nudge… and a mason jar!

Autumn has a way of inviting us to slow down, notice the little things, and explore our creative side. The crunch of leaves beneath our feet, the smell of cinnamon, the changing colors of the trees, and the comfort of a favorite sweater can all spark a little inspiration.

But what happens when you want to be creative, like your fingers are literally twitching to create, and you have absolutely no idea where to begin?

Enter The Fall Creativity Jar!

This simple, inexpensive activity is a fun way to invite a little creativity into your day. Perfect for you or the kids! No artistic talent required. No complicated instructions. Just a jar filled with tiny invitations to play, imagine, write, doodle, and explore.

And the best part? There is no right or wrong way to do it!

What You’ll Need

  • A mason jar or any small container (or that pickle jar you saved for something, you know you have one beneath the sink.)
  • Paper in your favorite fall colors (orange, yellow, red, brown, or whatever you have!)
  • Scissors
  • A pen or marker
  • Optional: Twine, ribbon, or a few autumn decorations (have fun with decorating it, I mean, why not?!)

How to Make Your Fall Creativity Jar

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Find a jar and a few sheets of paper. Colored paper makes it festive, but plain paper works just as well.

Step 2: Create Your Creativity Slips

Cut your paper into 25 small strips or squares, large enough to write a short creative prompt on each one.

Step 3: Add a Little Inspiration

Write one of the 25 prompts below on each slip of paper. Feel free to add a few of your own! (FREE Printable PDF Sheet of 10 Prompts)

Step 4: Fold and Fill

Fold each slip so the words are hidden and drop them into your jar. Give the jar a gentle shake to mix them up.

Step 5: Pick, Play, and Create!

Whenever you need a little creative spark, reach into your jar and pull out a prompt.

Give yourself 5, 10, or 15 minutes to explore it. You can write, draw, paint, imagine, or even combine a few ideas.

Remember, this isn’t about creating a masterpiece. It’s about enjoying the process.

A Few Gentle Reminders

Your creativity jar isn’t another item for your to-do list.

It’s an invitation.

Some days you might spend 20 minutes creating something wonderful. Other days, you might scribble for two minutes, laugh at your own drawing, and move on.

Both count.

Don’t like the prompt you picked? Put it back and choose another.

Want to interpret the prompt differently? Go for it!

And if your creation turns out messy, strange, unfinished, or completely unexpected?

Even better.

Keep the Creativity Going

Place your jar somewhere you’ll see it: on your desk, beside your favorite chair, or near your morning coffee.

Invite family members, friends, or coworkers to add their own prompts. You might even make a second jar for winter! (Yes, please!)

The goal isn’t to become more artistic or productive. It’s simply to make a little room for curiosity, imagination, and play. You know, be the big kid having way too much fun with this, no one is judging you here.

So grab a jar, gather some paper, and let autumn surprise you.

Sometimes the smallest creative sparks lead to the loveliest discoveries.
