The Filter is Fading… Lord, Help My Tongue!
Something happened after I hit 43. It’s like my mouth said, “Hey, I’ve waited long enough—your thoughts are coming out, ready or not!” Suddenly, I understand those older folks who don’t give a flying flip if their words hurt your feelings. It’s not always about rudeness—they’re just tired of dancing around the truth.
But here’s the thing—I want to be kind. I want my words to build up, not bulldoze. Still, it’s a daily battle between speaking truth and biting my tongue. And on some days, biting it feels like trying to wrestle a wild bull with a pool noodle.
The Bible doesn’t shy away from this struggle either. It pretty much lays it out plain:
- “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.” – Proverbs 21:23
(Yes, Lord. I could’ve avoided so much drama if I’d just zipped it.) - “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
(A gentle reply… not sarcasm. Not the “truth bomb.” Just softness.) - “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise…” – Proverbs 17:28
(Silence = wisdom? Then why do I feel like I’ve got a 24/7 podcast running in my head?)
So how do we filter better—without losing our personality or turning into robots? A few small steps:
- Pause before speaking. A deep breath is often enough time for the Holy Spirit to whisper, “Maybe not that one.”
- Pray for a guarded mouth. “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” – Psalm 141:3
- Practice silence. It’s a spiritual discipline! You don’t have to fill every pause. Let others talk—and just listen.
- Keep your “why” in mind. Are your words for love, growth, and encouragement? Or just for the “mic drop”?
So yes—I’m praying. Praying for wisdom. For restraint. Lord, please help me keep my filter and not deliver a sting but positivity and blessings instead.
Anyone else out there feeling this tug-of-war between honesty and holiness? Let’s keep growing—one word at a time. Keep each other in check, with sweet words and kindness.
